The Government seems to think that continuing the freeze on fuel duty is a great idea – helping people struggling to get by.
The reality is somewhat different – the biggest gainers from the freeze are the richest households who travel more and use more fuel than the rest of us.
Keeping the cost of motoring below what it should be (to cover not just the fuel but negative effects), just encourages people to travel more and by car.
And we all lose out – whether in terms of more congestion and more air pollution (which has serious effects on health, particularly poorer people); noise pollution and general degradation of the environment.
Doubtless opposition parties will raise these points, but probably not as they are as committed to short-termism as the Government.
