Traffic (3) the picture in Cornwall

What is happening on the roads in Cornwall? Data on vehicle traffic miles (expressed in thousands), saw a peak of 1,920,600 in 2011 with 2015 totals down 3% to 1,862,100. Total car VTM changed from 1,515,000 to 1,416,700 or 6%. Light goods vehicles and Heavy Goods vehicles however both increased from 2011 to 2015 by 12% and 11% respectively.

Comparing the numbers between 2000 and 2015 shows an overall increase in traffic miles of 17%, from 1,597,600 to 1,862,100. Car vehicle miles rose from 1,294,400 to 1,416,700 or 10%. There was a staggering increase in Light Goods Vehicles of 69% from 193,200 to 326,600. Both pedal cycle and motorcycle VTM fell back.

What do we have then? A large increase between 2000 and 2015 but with the 2015 totals below those of 2011. Is this a post-recession blip? And the fundamental question why does it feel different on the road? Tomorrow we will look at specific roads to see if that assists in our analysis.
