Britain is not “full” and very little of the country is built upon. With an ageing demographic, we need our population to expand; and with birth rates declining, immigration will be key to propping up the economy, the NHS and the care industry.
With an ageing demographic, we need our population to expand.
Why? The population cannot continue to grow indefinitely – it’s not sustainable. We need to work towards a steady state population. That could well mean allowing the UK population to fall. Yes an aging demographic would bring challenges but also opportunities. We would have to make the workforce more productive as the proportion of elderly increased but we would not have to continually devote resources to keeping up with an expanding population. The economy and society would change ultimately for the better.
