“The green belt can be rightly protected. There is plenty of land which is not green belt that we can build on and which is suitable for housing and we need to get on with it. We need to find new ways to encourage it.”
So said the Business Secretary Sajid Javid in 2015. But hes not the only one. Various politicians, commentators and members of the public follow the same line – “Oh look all that empty land out there.” But ’empty’ land is invariably used whether for food production (no there is not a Planet Tesco where all the food is produced), environmental activities – carbon sequestration, bio-diversity, or landscape purposes (yes many people quite like to live in a green, uncongested environment).
So no, its not empty and unused, we use it to live. [And you may not have noticed but there are other species out there who like it as well!]
