News this week of the ongoing talks in Paris about what to do about climate change. Yet despite some optimism about the outcome it appears that even if every country carries out its pledges temperatures will go on rising into the danger zone.
It is also rather difficult to equate the concern with actual policies carried out on the ground. The UK government (and for that matter the main opposition parties) are all supportive of allowing the population to rise (more people consuming more does fit with the need to reduce consumption!). There is widespread support for more house building and more roads. Flying is now apparently a right and supporters of an extra runway at Heathrow continue to assert its benefits. Yet flying is one of the worst offenders when it comes to gases creating climate change!
We cannot carry on with the same old policies and deal with climate change – it’s just not possible!
