Provision of leisure activities in Cornwall is in a shambles. On the one hand news that various leisure centres may have to close due to lack of funds for repairs, yet on the other hints of more support for the stadium (many miles) outside Truro.
There is a disparity here. The stadium is for a small select group of sports people, while leisure centres cater for the local sporting community of an area.
In theory for many people getting to a local leisure centre is relatively easy – often possible to reach by walking or using the local bus service. Yet the stadium can only be reached by car or possibly coach – thus leading to greater congestion on the roads.
It might seem obvious that local facilities – (the more local facilities are, the greater the levels of participation) – should be supported over large distant ones especially if the latter cater to a small group of elite sports people. But large iconic projects always take priority regardless of their use or wider impact.
