Many commentators point to how GDP has increased over the last few years and is now higher than it was before the recession. But looking at GDP per head paints a different picture. It grew at an average rate of less than 1% in the four years from 2010 to 2014. [ In the previous 13 years (1997 to 2010), growth averaged over 1.5%.
In fact output per person is lower than it was before the recession. Part of this is a consequence of a larger population in the UK.
A larger population usually means a larger GDP but per person we are not better off!!!! So what is the point of a larger population??
